Community Vision

In 2006 Council consulted widely with the Queanbeyan community to develop a long term Community Vision for our city. This Vision identified seven Strategic Priorities to give direction and focus for Council’s future activities. This Community Vision works in concert with Council’s Mission to set out what the community and Queanbeyan City Council as an organisation aspire to for the future of Queanbeyan City. These in turn are underpinned by Council’s Organisational Values and the values we want to promote within our organisation. These Values influence the Council’s Strategies, Plans and outputs to direct our outcomes which are what we want to achieve for the Queanbeyan Community as a whole.

The Community Vision is summarised in a Values Statement which envisages what our city will be like by 2021.

It is the year 2021 ...

Queanbeyan is a thriving, lively city set within a natural environment. It is a community with a heart based on its country values, its sense of belonging, its spirit and the warmth and friendliness of its people.

It has a population of around 45,000 people who have chosen to live there because of the community spirit, the affordable lifestyle, the natural setting, the different living choices of rural residential or suburban living, the retail, health, education and cultural services, the prosperous economy and easy accessibility within the city, and to and from Canberra, Sydney, the mountains and the coast

In building this Vision the people of Queanbeyan considered what they valued most. These values were seen as critical to the achievement of the Vision as they will drive what the future looks like for the city. The Queanbeyan Community said it values:

The Community

The sense of belonging and connecting with the people, the place in which they live; the friendliness; the different neighbourhoods, the multi-cultural nature of the community; the country feel; the sense of safety.

The Environment

The natural setting that surrounds Queanbeyan, and the river, the waterways, the flora and fauna, and the open space that has been created within the built environment.

The History

History is told through the connection with the original inhabitants, the early settlers, rural settlements, the building of the town centre, and the birthplace of a new national capital. The uniqueness in comparison to neighbours is that we have buildings and places in the community that portray this history.

The Lifestyle

The country lifestyle with city benefits; affordability; access to services, the opportunity to participate in sports, art, culture and community groups.
