Councillor John Barilaro

John BarilaroJohn Barilaro was born in Queanbeyan and raised into a strong family, who instilled in him the values of hard work and community service.

After leaving school John went to work on the floor of the family factory, Ryleho Home Solutions, manufacturing energy efficient timber windows and doors. Today John is the Managing Director of Ryleho Home Solutions, a company renowned for innovation and a can-do attitude, which has expanded to employ fifteen staff - a role which has provided him with firsthand experience of the problems facing small businesses in the region.

John lives in Jerrabomberra with his wife Deanna and their two young daughters, and as a parent he is naturally concerned about the future of the local community. John stood for election to Queanbeyan City Council in 2008, because he believed that ordinary mums and dads needed a greater say on the decisions that affected them.

One of my goals is to work with all levels of Government so that we can get a High School for the community of Jerrabomberra. The Tralee development which is part of South Jerrabomberra has already made allowances for land for three new schools. With 5000 new homes in Tralee, 5000 New homes in Googong and with the already 9000 residents of Jerrabomberra, the current primary school is busting at it seams. But the greatest loss for the community is the fracture caused when kids leave Jerrabomberra Primary and go onto High school all over the Queanbeyan & ACT region. There is no doubt that a High School is an important issue in Jerrabomberra.

John’s other passion in life is sport. In 2000 John was one of the co-founders of the Monaro Panthers Football Club. He has been President for eight years and now serves as vice-president of the club, which now boasts over 900 registered junior players and you can catch him on most weekends playing, coaching or cheering on his beloved Panthers from the sidelines, Having two girls that play, he has steered his club to promoting and developing girls and women football, with the club realizing this as a real growth area for the sport. Today, the Panthers boast many girls’ teams, with two under 18 teams playing in the ACT Women’s League. In 2010 John was the driving force behind the club’s successful bid for a return place in the Men’s ACT Premier League.

John has a strong belief in the future of Queanbeyan. He sees health as the immediate priority for the region, in particular ensuring that all residents have equitable access to first class health services, regardless of where they live. The Queanbeyan ring road is also the one most pressing priorities that Queanbeyan urgently needs resolved. With new developments such as Googong and Tralee, this single one project is needed to assure continued growth, a vibrant and metropolitan city centre and the opportunity to regain control of the roads in the CBD.

John works on the mantra of, “Your Voice, your vision, let me know what is important to you.”
