Kerbside Cleanup

Each household is entitled to two cleanups per financial year that is paid for in the rates of each property. There are three systems in place for Clean ups for Queanbeyan residents depending on the type of property that you reside in (please see below).

Before placing items out for a clean up, check to see if they can be re used by someone else or given to a local charity. You can also try recycling websites such as www.freecycle.org, Gum tree and the free classifieds or have a garage sale.

The Garage Sale Trail is held annually in October you can register on line www.garagesaletrail.com.au

Mattress recycling - Only one mattress can be collected in the kerbside collection. If you have more than one mattress you can take to Mugga Lane landfill or contact Soft Landing to drop off or have collected at your own cost.

Please note

  • Material that is collected in the Council Clean Ups will go to landfill except for metals which will be recycled.
  • Tyres (Rims will be accepted), Televisions and Computers will not be accepted in Kerbside Cleanups.  Televisions and Computers can be taken to Mugga Lane Landfill and Mitchell Resource Recovery centre and dropped off for free for recycling. For a cost, Tyres can be taken to Mugga Lane Landfill and Mitchell Resource Recovery centre. 
  • Materials need to be able to be lifted by two people anything larger or heavier may not be accepted.
  • Materials need to be presented in a neat and tidy manner, the contractor may refuse to collect if not presented neatly
  • Residents are limited to one trailer load per collection, contractors will leave items if  over the limit and you will be responsible for disposing of to the landfill.
  • Items are to placed out no earlier than one day before collection date for booked collections or scheduled multi unit collections or there could be a fine imposed of $4000 for illegal dumping.
  • Council is not responsible for any items left on the kerbside, please ensure you do not leave items that you want to keep on the kerbside.
  • Only ONE Mattress per collection or mattress and base (ensemble) and please advise when booking if you have a mattress and keep separate from other items.

Items not accepted in Council Cleanups

  • tyres
  • tv's and computers
  • asbestos or unidentifiable fibro sheeting (you will need to use a registered Asbestos remover to take Asbestos to the Landfill)
  • fibreglass (including fibreglass roof sheeting)
  • chemicals
  • paints
  • gas bottles
  • other hazardous material (chemicals can be dropped off at the ACT Landfill)
  • large car parts
  • builders rubble, concrete, tiles, bricks, soil
  • car batteries (these can be dropped off at the Waste Minimisation Centre 5 Lorn Road for recycling) or other battery centres
  • greenwaste ( please place in your green waste bin or take to the Waste Minimisation Centre 5 Lorn Road Queanbeyan
  • any other items that the contractor deems unacceptable or unsafe to collect

Houses and Units

If you live in a house or single multi-unit and you have your own set of garbage, recycling and green waste bins you will have access to two collections of unwanted items up to one trailer load per collection from the property each financial year.

Clean Ups will be held throughout the year except for the two week period over Christmas and New Year. Residents must book their kerbside cleanup by contacting council on 6285 6246.

Items are not to be put out until 1 day before the booked date or risk being fined for illegal dumping or risk others adding to your pile which you will be responsible for. Items that have not been booked in for a clean up or that are left out for more than 1 day before a booked cleanup up could incur a fine for illegal dumping of $4000.

Multi-unit dwellings

Residents who live in multi-unit dwellings that share bins have two scheduled cleanups per financial year in March and September. Residents will be notified of their clean up date by mail. Items left on the kerbside outside of the booked date will be seen as illegal dumping and you could incur a fine of $4000.  If you would like to check when your next scheduled cleanup is please call 6285 6246.

Rural Cleanups

Rural properties have two clean ups in the financial year on set dates in March and September. Residents will be notified by mail of their clean up date and drop off location.  If you would like to know when your next scheduled cleanup is please call 6285 6246

Illegal Dumping fines apply

 It is illegal to dump, or permit to be dumped, any waste, rubbish or soil products on private or public land, unless it is a licensed landfill site. Under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 illegal dumping of waste can incur a fine of $4000.
