11 August 2015

Queanbeyan City Council is calling all creative minds and crafty souls to put their minds into gear for the $7,500 2015 Clearwater Sculpture Prize.

The Queanbeyan Clearwater Sculpture Prize will be held on the foreshore of the Queanbeyan River during the Queanbeyan River Festival on 16-18 October. Entry forms can be submitted until Friday 28 August 2015.

The 2015 Sculpture Prize will provide $7,500 worth of prizes, with the Major Award sponsored by Queanbeyan City Council worth $5,000. The Encouragement Award and People's Choice Award are worth $1,000 and $500 will be provided to the winner for the Children's Choice Award.

"The inaugural Clearwater Sculpture Prize in 2014 was a great success and I look forward to seeing the event continue to grow this year," Queanbeyan Mayor, Cr Tim Overall. "It was a stunning sight to see 25 sculptures scattered across the banks of the Queanbeyan River, and the quality of the sculptures was something to behold.

"Queanbeyan has a very vibrant arts community and this competition provides another avenue for our artists residents to show off their skills and ability to the community."

Entrants are encouraged to take inspiration from the river and surrounds. The concept for the event centres on creating community awareness and engagement with the river, whilst the promoting the river and surrounds as a recreational space.

"Prospective entrants are encouraged to think freshwater, flora and fauna, conservation, water rats, platypus, swimming, kayaking, fishing and recreational activities that happen on and under the water, and up and down the river," Cr Overall said.

The Clearwater Sculpture Prize welcomes applications from artists of all abilities – from first time sculptors, to professional and experienced practitioners. Collaborative works from community groups, schools and other groups are also encouraged.
