Queanbeyan kids design recycling & rubbish bins for skate parks

12 May 2015

A number of Queanbeyan kids, through the Axis Youth Centre, have teamed up with Council staff to design new rubbish and recycling bins at three skate parks around Queanbeyan.

The bins can be seen at the Moore Park Skate Park; Henderson Road Skate Park and Jerrabomberra Skate Park.

Recycling bins were included after skaters and bike-riders carried out a litter audit at Moore Park and found that most of the litter could actually be recycled.

Placement of the bins was also important as well-placed bins ensure their use.

Mayor Tim Overall said the bins looked great and said the whole community would appreciate the work done by the young people.

“The bins will assist in reducing waste to landfill which is what Queanbeyan is aiming to do. Our goal is to meet the NSW Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy target which is to increase recycling rates to 70% by 2021-22,” Cr Overall said.

“The message the kids are sending to the community is clear, young people understand the need to recycle and are going to show leadership in this area.”

The design and installation of the bins was made possible through a $10,000 Beverage Container Recycling Community Grant, from Keep Australia Beautiful with the support of the Coca-Cola Foundation and Coca-Cola South Pacific.
