Free loose-fill asbestos testing is continuing in Queanbeyan and for homeowners across 26 NSW local government areas. If you suspect that your home contains loose-fill asbestos insulation you should take the following precautions:
- Do not access the ceiling space or sub floor areas.
- Do not drill into walls.
- Register for the free testing.
Residents with homes built before 1980, are eligible for free testing of the insulation within their roof space. So far in Queanbeyan, 970 properties have registered for testing. Of these 611 property reports have been completed with only one property identified as containing loose-fill asbestos.
Residents should expect a delay in the assessment reports being returned to them by NSW WorkCover due to the large number of samples being submitted to the laboratory.
Meanwhile a dedicated taskforce has been established to develop a comprehensive action plan to advise the NSW Government on the most appropriate enduring solution to the loose-fill asbestos issue in NSW. This may include options such as government purchase, demolition and owner rebuild. In the short term an assistance package has been offered to affected property owners.
The Loose-Fill Asbestos Insulation Taskforce will report to the NSW Government by 31 May 2015. For more information, or to register for testing, call Service NSW on 13 77 88 or register online http://loosefillasbestos.nsw.gov.au/ for testing, or to receive regular updates.
