29 October 2015

Three weeks out from the 2015 event, the 2014 Queanbeyan Gift Carnival has been named the Australian Athletic Confederation’s Event of the Year for 2014.

The Gift Carnival was held over two days in November 2014 and attracted some of the nation’s best athletes, including Gift ambassadors and Olympians Melissa Breen and Lauren Wells. The Carnival stretched beyond the race track with the inaugural Street Party in Crawford St a success and thousands of residents enjoying the Queanbeyan Family Fun Day in Queanbeyan Park.

“This is a fantastic honour for a great community event which is loved and well-attended by the Queanbeyan community,” Queanbeyan Mayor, Cr Tim Overall said.

“I would like to congratulate all of the staff involved in the running of last year’s Queanbeyan Gift Carnival, especially Tracey Lamont and Chris Duncan. You would be surprised at the level of work and dedication that is required to make an event like this come off.

“And of course I must thank all of our sponsors for last year’s Gift who made it possible, especially Neil Kennedy at the Telstra Shop Queanbeyan, last year’s major sponsor, and the Queanbeyan Leagues Club which has been sponsoring the event for the past 15 years.

The 2012 Queanbeyan Gift Carnival was also named the Australian Athletic Confederation’s Event of the Year and the NSW Athletic League’s Carnival of the Year.

Planning for the 2015 Queanbeyan Gift Carnival is in full swing. The Queanbeyan Gift Calcutta will return to the program in 2015 and will be held at Hotel Queanbeyan on Friday 20 November, commencing at 6pm.

The Gift racing gets underway on Saturday 21 November with the heats in Queanbeyan Park. The action continues on Saturday night in Crawford St with the Street Party. The Street Party will see Crawford St, between Monaro and Morisset Sts closed, and a filled with a range of activities, food stalls and live entertainment.

The action returns to Queanbeyan Park on Sunday 22 November with the finals of the Queanbeyan Gift and the Family Fun Day. Again, Olympians Breen and Wells will be the headline acts, along with local chances Andrea Thompson and Karina Hopkins. The Family Fun Day is just as it sounds – a great day out for the family with a range of free activities for everyone.
