Winners of 2016 Heritage Awards announced

Queanbeyan Mayor, Cr Tim Overall has presented the Queanbeyan City Council Heritage Awards for 2016 to three worthy recipients.

The winners, which were announced on Saturday at the Queanbeyan Museum as part of the Queanbeyan Heritage Festival, were:

Category 1 – Restoration of a heritage building – commercial or residential –
Winner - 43 The Crescent

The restoration included:
•    Replacement and restoration of the roof
•    Renovation to the kitchen & dining area
•    Construction of a new bedroom wing
•    Painting and decorating
•    Landscaping

 

Highly-commended – 11 Surveyor St

Restoration included:
•    Use of original material
•    New front fence
•    New driveway gates
•    Additional heritage plantings

 

Category 3 – Promotion/contribution to heritage

Winner – Marilyn Folger
•    Involved in the Queanbeyan Museum as a member for many years. 
•    A major contributor to the Museum’s oral history project
•    Contributed to many historical publications

“Congratulations to the winners of this year’s Queanbeyan Heritage Awards,” Cr Overall said. “We know that Queanbeyan has a very proud history and it’s pleasing to see members of the community committed to ensuring that history is not forgotten through the preservation of heritage properties.

“Undertaking restoration projects on houses and businesses is generally a long and costly process, however having seen the winning properties I can say that the work has certainly been worth it.

“It is also pleasing to recognise the contribution of Marilyn Folger who has been involved in the Queanbeyan Museum as a member of many years, a major contributor to the Museum’s oral history project and a contributor to many historical publications.”
