Seniors Week program encourages seniors to grow young

There has never been a better opportunity for Queanbeyan’s seniors to get involved and grow young as a senior than this year’s Seniors Week which runs from 1-10 April.

Queanbeyan City Council is encouraging seniors to come and try a:
•    guided walks and gentle exercise with new friends
•    hands on gardening workshops from local green thumbs
•    information sessions on how to avoid scams, prepare for a funeral, and renew your licence.
•    head-to-head quiz between the Mayor’s team, seniors  and local high school students.
•    croquet, carpet bowls, Euchre, and basic computers.
•    behind the scenes tour of the Queanbeyan Art Society, the Queanbeyan Recycling Centre and the Queanbeyan Museum.
•    listening to secret men’s business at The Men’s Shed Open Day.  

The highlight of Seniors Week will be the Seniors wellbeing – Live with Attitude event on Friday 8 April. The event will be held at the Henderson Rd Reserve from 11am-2pm and will include healthy eating and cooking demonstrations, gentle exercise, gardening demonstrations, talks on sustainability and road safety. Plus FREE shower timers for the first 200 visitors. A free barbecue and tea and coffee will be available for those who book in advance by calling 6285 6522 or emailing cheryl.rule@qcc.nsw.gov.au  

“Council has put together a very exciting and diverse program for 2016 Seniors Week which includes guided walks, informative talks on pet ownership and computer usage, museum displays, musical performances, carpet bowls, croquet and the very famous and extremely competitive Mayoral Quiz,” Queanbeyan Mayor, Cr Tim Overall said.

“This is the most extensive program I have seen for Seniors Week in my time as Mayor and while it may not be possible for you to attend every event I do encourage you to get along to some of the events we have planned.”

The annual Seniors Week Mayoral Quiz will again be hotly contested. Queanbeyan Mayor, Cr Tim Overall caught up with contestants Rhonda Wannett, President of the Senior Citizens Centre Queanbeyan and Olwyn-Anne Cook, Secretary of Senior Citizens Centre Queanbeyan. The Mayoral Quiz has been running since 1993 and the Senior Citizens Centre is chasing its fourth straight victory, while Queanbeyan City Council has not won the quiz since 2010.
