Queanbeyan City Council to consult community over proposed boundary changes

09 February 2016
Queanbeyan City Council will hold a public forum on Tuesday, 16 February to consult the community regarding the NSW Government’s merger proposal for Queanbeyan and part of Palerang.

The merger proposal recommends Queanbeyan merge with the western part of Palerang, including Bungendore, Wamboin, Captains Flat, Lake George and parts of Majors Creek and Araluen. The remainder of Palerang Council is proposed to be merged with Goulburn Mulwaree Council. The merger proposal would see Queanbeyan’s local government area
increase from 172km2 to 3,791km2.

Queanbeyan would merge with the western part of Palerang, including Bungendore, Wamboin, Captains Flat, Lake George and parts of Majors Creek and Araluen. The remainder of Palerang Council is proposed to be merged with Goulburn Mulwaree Council.

Queanbeyan City Council will use feedback from the community at the forum, to be held at Council Chambers next Tuesday, to inform its submission to the NSW Government regarding the proposed changes.

The NSW Government has appointed a delegate, John Turner, to look at the merger proposal in detail and provide a report back to the Local Government Minister Paul Toole and the Boundaries Commission.

Mr Turner will hear directly from the community this Thursday, at public hearings to be held at Queanbeyan and Braidwood.

Queanbeyan Mayor Tim Overall said Council had been engaging with and informing the community over the last two years as the NSW Government had moved forward with its Fit for the Future reforms.

Mr Overall said residents had received flyers in their letterboxes over the last week, advertising the forum and the main points Council will be addressing in its submission. He said Council was now looking to the community once again to help finalise what would be its final submission on this issue.
