Minister requests examination of alternate merger proposal

Queanbeyan City Council has this afternoon been advised that the Minister for Local Government has requested the examination of the merger proposal put forward by Palerang Council at its meeting on 14 January 2016.

The proposal put forward by Palerang would see the entire Palerang Local Government Area merged with the Queanbeyan City Council Local Government Area. The merger proposal will be examined by John Turner, a delegate for the Office of Local Government. The merger proposal is now available for public comment until 8 April 2016 and will be subject to a public inquiry, the date for which has not been advised.

The merger proposal put forward by the NSW Government in January 2016 to merge Queanbeyan and the western part of Palerang remains active, with submissions closing on Sunday 28 February. Mr Turner is also the delegate tasked with examining this proposal. The remainder of the Palerang Local Government Area is proposed to merge with Goulburn Mulwaree Council under the NSW Government’s proposal. Mr John Rayner is the delegate charged with examining the Goulburn Mulwaree-Palerang proposal.

Queanbeyan City Council is yet to form a position on either the NSW Government’s merger proposal or the Palerang proposal. Council will consider its position on the Queanbeyan-part Palerang merge at its meeting on 24 February. The report to that meeting will be available later today on Council’s website at www.qcc.nsw.gov.au
