Climate Change

The challenge of climate change

It is now widely accepted that climate change poses a serious threat to all ecosystems, economies and societies. Tackling climate change is a crucial element in safeguarding the welfare of future generations, providing for inter-generational equity and protecting biological diversity, ecological processes and life support systems.

On a global scale Australia is not a large emitter of greenhouse gases, but on a per capita basis we are one of the highest emitters. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is the best possible way to limit the extent and future impacts of climate change.

As stand alone organisations, local governments have set no over arching emission reduction targets, so it is currently up to each local council to take the initiative and set their own targets. Climate change is a compelling issue. Now more than ever, it is clear that Queanbeyan City Council’s business and functions must be undertaken in a way that is environmentally sustainable.

Queanbeyan City Council's Climate Change Action Plan

Council has begun the process of developing a Climate Change Action Plan that will guide how we will respond to Climate Change through both Mitigation (i.e. reducing our greenhouse gas emissions) and Adaptation (identifying risks and preparing Queanbeyan for changes in our climate).
