Edwin Land Parkway
Queanbeyan Mayor, Cr Tim Overall and Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, the Hon Dr Mike Kelly officially started construction on the Edwin Land Parkway extension on 18 June with a turning of the sod ceremony.
The extension will connect the suburbs of Jerrabomberra and Karabar and will provide the residents of both with alternate exits from their suburbs. In April Council appointed Kenoss Contractors as the preferred tenderer for the project and the company expects construction to take eight months to complete.
“The commencement of construction is a momentous day for the Queanbeyan community and one I am proud to be involved with,” Cr Overall said. “Extensive planning has gone into the construction of this road and unfortunately there have been a number of statutory delays which have impacted upon the start of construction.
“But now the delays are behind us and we can concentrate on the construction of the road which is expected to take eight months to complete, meaning we should see cars travelling between Karabar and Jerrabomberra on this road in early 2012.”
The new section of Edwin Land Parkway will be approximately 2.3km in length and will have street lighting along the entire alignment. There will be an off-road cycle and pedestrian path constructed to join with the existing path on Edwin Land Parkway.
The road will be constructed as a single carriageway to match the existing Edwin Land Parkway, with the exception of an additional slow lane for the climb from Old Cooma Rd. Work will also include the construction of noise barriers, installation of double-glazed windows in two-storey properties and landscaping including the planting of shrubs. The intersection of Old Cooma Rd and Edwin Land Parkway will be via a controlled intersection using traffic lights.
“The Edwin Land Parkway extension forms a major part of the overall vision for the Queanbeyan road network,” Cr Overall said “It is envisaged that in years to come the termination point of the extension will join up with the Ellerton Drive Ring Road. Council is also expected to appoint a tenderer this year to undertake the first stage of upgrades to Old Cooma Rd.”
The Edwin Land Parkway extension will cost $11.75 million and will be funded by a $6 million grant from the Federal Government, Section 94 contributions, loans and reserves.
