Crawford St Lifestyle Precinct

Update - 10 May 2012

Contractors have complete all works on the eastern side of Crawford St and are now fully concentrating on the western side of the street which is expected to be complete within the next two weeks.

New traffic lights have been installed at the Monaro and Crawford St intersection and two pre-planned traffic changes were implemented. These traffic changes are:

  • no right turn from Monaro St into Crawford St
  • no right turn from Crawford St into Monaro St.

Please note the no right turn from Monaro St into Crawford St will be re-evaluated after a six-month trial.

Work is now progressing well on the western side of the street with paving complete along most of the street and parking bays poured. Landscaping will be undertaken over the next two weeks.

The new street lights on the western side of the street have been erected and will be connected to the power supply in the coming days.

To ensure the project remains on track to finish in May, the contractors have been undertaking out of hours work to ensure minimal disruption is caused to pedestrians and businesses. Some of this work includes paving in front of businesses and the connection of water mains and other underground work.

What is the Crawford St Lifestyle Precinct

Construction has now commenced on the most significant upgrade to the Queanbeyan CBD in history - the Crawford St Lifestyle Precinct. The Lifestyle Precinct will see the section of Crawford St between Monaro and Morisset Sts transformed into a pedestrian friendly area where alfresco dining and entertainment will be encouraged.
When complete, traffic flow will be reduced to a single lane in both directions. The footpaths will be significantly widened and levelled to create a much more pleasant place to enjoy a meal or entertainment. Existing parking spaces will be retained when construction is complete.

How long will it take?

Construction has commenced and is expected to take 43 weeks to complete (about May 2012). This time frame may change depending on weather conditions.

How will traffic flow be affected?

Traffic is now flowing in both directions along Crawford St. Temporary changes are required by the contractors and traffic management will be put in place when these occur.

Will parking be affected?

Parking will be affected during construction. Some parking is now being made available on the eastern side of Crawford St, there is no parking available on the western side of the street. To offset this the site of former Queanbeyan Age building has been leased to allow for extra parking. This carpark can be accessed via Fallick Lane. There is ample carparking available nearby for your customers. Click here to download a copy of a parking map.

What will happen to the bus interchange?

The bus interchange will be relocated to the corner of Lowe and Morisset Sts.
