Bins
Ordering new bins for brand new houses
If you buy or build a brand new house in the urban areas of Queanbeyan or Jerrabomberra, you will need to organise the delivery of a set of bins. This can be done by ringing Council on 6285 6268. The bins will not be delivered until the property is occupied and there is a place for them to be securely stored.
Bins delivered to your house remain the property of Council at all times. However, you may mark your house number and street name on the bins. If the property is later sold or tenanted, the bins remain on the property.
It is the resident’s responsibility to look after the bins, including bringing them in as soon as possible after collection, and storing them securely when not out for collection. Council will charge for the replacement of bins which are stolen or damaged due to neglect.
Once bins are delivered to your house, Council will levy a waste services charge in the rates of that property. The waste services at a property may only be changed on the advice of the owner or managing real estate agent.
If you are a landlord or managing real estate agent of a tenanted house, it is advisable to check that the bins are there at final inspection, and then lock them in the garage, shed or laundry until the next tenants arrive. Bins often ‘disappear’ between tenants and Council will charge for bin replacement if this occurs.
Ordering new bins for commercial/industrial properties
A commercial/industrial (or other non-residential) property may have Council waste, recycling and greenwaste services if they wish to, but this is not mandatory. A commercial/industrial property may have Council services and/or private waste collection services. Council’s waste services for these types of property are 240 litre kerbside bin services only - no larger bulk-style containers are available through Council.
A commercial property may have as many of each type of bin as they require, and are charged per bin in the rates of the property they service. New bins or changes to existing services may only be ordered on the advice of the owner or managing real estate agent. This can be done by ringing Council on 6285 6268.
Replacing a lost bin
Council will repair or replace at its discretion any bin which is damaged or worn through normal use. This is free of charge. Property owners will be billed for the replacement of bins which are damaged through incorrect use or disappear due to incorrect storage. To organise bin repairs ring Council on 6285 6268
