Planning policy in Queanbeyan City is defined through the Queanbeyan Local Environmental Plan 1991, Queanbeyan Local Environmental Plan 1998, Yarrowlumla Local Environmental Plan 2002, various Development Control Plans and Section 94 Contributions plans.
The Local Environmental Plan (LEP) provides the planning framework for encouraging orderly development within the city while protecting important aspects of the natural and built environment. These also provide the regulatory framework for the development of Queanbeyan.
Development Control Plans (DCPs) supplement the Local Environmental Plans by providing more detailed information concerning various aspects relating to new development such as building design standards, landscaping, car parking requirements, controls on outdoor advertising and the like.
Complementary to the Local Environmental Plans and Development Control Plans are the
Development Contribution Plans (also know as Section 94 Plans) and Developer Servicing Plans. These enable Council to levy developer contributions to fund public facilities and services of a capital nature which is generated by the demand of new development.
The Strategic Development team is also responsible for
Community Land Plans of Management. Community Land Plans of Management set out Council's management regimes for publicly owned land classified as 'community' under the Local Government Act 1993.
Strategic Development is also responsible for
Economic Development.
